Częstoskurcz komorowy (puls ponad 100 uderzeń na minutę i przynajmniej trzy kolejne nieregularne uderzenia serca) może doprowadzić do migotania komór, które jest najczęstszym powodem zatrzymania akcji serca. Inne, rzadziej spotykane przyczyny to zatrzymanie oddechu, zakrztuszenie, ciężki uraz, porażenie prądem czy utonięcie.
