Choroby genetyczne spowodowane są mutacjami zmieniającymi informację genetyczną zakodowaną w genach. Powodują zaburzenie prawidłowej struktury oraz funkcjonowania organizmu. Zmiany te mogą występować w pojedynczych genach lub też dotyczyć struktury i liczby całych chromosomów i być przekazywane z pokolenia na pokolenie.
